Students defy blizzard to attend Brandon Career Symposium

Stormy conditions across southwestern Manitoba couldn’t stop this year’s Brandon Career Symposium.

Our Virtual Help Desk was on hand at the Brandon Career Symposium to talk about Set Your Course.

The annual event is for high school students to explore career, education, and training opportunities at Brandon’s Keystone Centre. It provides an engaging setting for students to connect with post-secondary institutions and services that help put them on their way to success. The 2017 Symposium featured exhibitor booths, sponsors, and activities for people of all ages.

Campus Manitoba’s Virtual Help Desk was on hand to answer questions about Set Your Course and eCourses Manitoba. Despite reduced traffic due to province-wide road closures and poor conditions in town, students were in good spirits as they took in the sights at the Symposium.

Brandon Career Symposium open for business

Our experience at previous events told us that students are eager to explore the career and education opportunities available in Manitoba.  The Brandon Career Symposium was no exception. Students shared their plans to be teachers, chefs, doctors, veterinary assistants, aircraft mechanics, and more.

As we did at the Rotary Career Symposium and the Canadian Immigrant Fair, we asked students to share a few details about their educational interests and career plans.

We had 106 entrants into our draw for a gift card. 87 of those students plan on furthering their education at a post-secondary institution — that’s over 80%! The most common career interests were teaching (with 10 responses) and nursing (with 6). Other careers included accounting, medicine, acting, engineering, and sports management.

We also asked about favourite subjects in school. The highest response was Math (33) and second was Science (19), with Physical Education (15) and English (13) rounding out the top four.

We used Set Your Course to show students what universities and colleges offer the education needed for their career goals.
